About us

Cheung’s Wing Chun was formed back in 2018 at Cambridge Arbury Community Centre CB4 2LD and presently remained active. The art is a form of Southern Chinese Martial Art that is most effective at close range. It was developed around the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) for practical self-defence rather than for sport or exhibition. Its characteristic nature is to attack relentlessly when the opportunity arises, while simultaneously neutralise the opponent’s attack. As such, movements are swift, efficient and economical.

Its practicality comes from not relying on the student’s size, gender, age or the initial need for a high level of fitness or flexibility. But instead, Wing Chun relies on the students’ intelligence and understanding of simple concepts and principles together with a lot of practice. At Cheung’s Wing Chun, students are taught techniques, concepts and principles of which are:

  • Redirect powerful attacks as opposed to use strength against strength.
  • Use one’s entire body mass to generate power.
  • To use and control centreline to misdirect and unbalance the assailant.

This day and age, it is better to have some kind of self-defence knowledge and basic know how, just in case, that your learned skills may be called upon.   So, if you are interested – click on the contact page and seek out the relevant information.  In the meantime, here are some clips about the art:
